Hot Melt Adhesives (HMA)

Hot Melt Adhesives is a name given to a thermoplastic material, solid at room temperature, and which can be applied liquid by means of heat. These materials stick strongly on the work surface once they cool down under their melting point. Unlike liquid adhesives, hot melts are applied without using chemical reactions or solvent evaporation which leads to important environmental benefits.

Waxes play an outstanding role in the production, processing and performance of hot melts and constitute up to 70 % of the total hot melt formulation. The key role of waxes in hot melts is:

  • Modifying the viscosity
  • Controlling the open and set times of the HMA
  • Increase the blocking point of the final adhesives
  • The melt range of waxes controls the temperature properties of a HMA
AST PetroChemie offers synthetic waxes which make them ideally suited to the requirements of modern packaging adhesives thanks to their high crystallinity and low melt viscosity.

Product Melting Point Penetration Color
AST 8100 96 – 101 2 max White
AST 8105 101 – 108 2 max White
AST 8200 105 – 115 3 max White

In addition, our selective range of petroleum waxes, like our highly branched structure of micro crystalline grades, are widely used in flexible packaging, book-binding and low temperature HMA applications, whilst our high melting point paraffin waxes can be considered as cost competitive blending components in various HMA systems.
