Paraffin Wax

Paraffin Wax is a hard wax consisting of a mixture of solid straight-chain hydrocarbons ranging in melting point from about 48ºC to 66ºC. The structure is macro crystalline, with large crystals and brittleness.

Paraffin Wax is obtained from petroleum by de-waxing light lubricating oil stocks and is mainly categorized by oil content and the degree of refinement:

  • Oil Content max 0,5 % – Fully Refined Paraffin Waxes
  • Oil Content max 1.5 % – Semi Refined Paraffin Waxes
  • Oil Content max 5.0 % – Scale Waxes
In case of oil content higher than 5 %, petroleum waxes are classified as slack waxes.

Paraffin Wax is used in candles, wax paper, polishes, cosmetics and electrical insulators. It forms a base for medial ointment, and supplies a waterproof coating for wood. In wood and paper matches, it helps to ignite the matchstick by supplying an easily vaporized hydrocarbon fuel.
